Attorney General of Pakistan

The Attorney-General for Pakistan (AG), is a senior legal advocate and legal adviser concerned with legal affairs and is the chief law officer of the Government of Pakistan.〔(Article 100(1) ) in Chapter 3: The Government in Part III: The Federation of Pakistan of the Constitution of Pakistan.〕
The Attorney-General is the chief lawyer of the Pakistan government who serves as a legal adviser to the Federal Government of Pakistan and enjoys rights of audience before the Parliament. Nominations comes from the Prime Minister's Secretariat that leads to the appointment confirmed by the President of Pakistan. The Constitution bars the Attorney-General from private practice until the termination of his or her employment.〔(Article 100(3) ) in Chapter 3: The Government in Part III: The Federation of Pakistan of the Constitution of Pakistan.〕 The office of Attorney General was established in 1947.
Mr Salman Aslam Butt is the current Attorney-General for Pakistan (serving since January 12, 2014.
==Overview==

Mr. Aziz A. Munshi, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of Pakistan holds the record for being Attorney General for Pakistan for four different terms (08.01.1985 to 30.10.1986) (29.05.1988 to 03.12.1988) (06.08.1990 to 13.07.1993) and (02.11.1999 to 30.09.2001), and Federal Law Minister from 28.11.1999 to 27.11.2000. Mr. Aziz A. Munshi has appeared as Attorney General in most of the important Constitutional cases in Pakistan's history before the Honourable Supreme Court and High Courts, including but not limited to the dissolution of the National Assembly and Provincial Assemblies on several occasions, and he has been responsible for the drafting and promulgation of federal and provincial laws as well as Constitutional amendments.
The 18th amendment ( passed in April 2010) to the Constitution of Pakistan abolished the Attorney General's right to private practice.
In January 2014, Attorney General Munir A. Malik, Senior Advocate Supreme Court, tendered his resignation from office citing personal reasons. He was succeeded by Mr Salman Aslam Butt, Advocate Supreme Court.
